Lawrence Holden has established himself as a touchstone of exemplary service in the financial services industry. Since graduating from Wake Forest University in 1973, where he was a scholarship baseball player and team captain, Lawrence, known to his friends as Chip, established a philosophy of operating with integrity and focusing on long-term relationships with his clients. In order to best assist his clients, Chip believes in a team approach to financial and estate strategies with other professional advisors. He has been a financial advisor for 51 years.

Chip specializes in negotiating large life insurance contracts for business owners, executives, and high-net-worth individuals who have pre-existing health conditions. He also focuses on business succession planning, non-qualified benefit plans for key employees; Bank Owned Life Insurance (BOLI) and assists his peers in the design implementation, and investment management of personal retirement income plans.

In 1989 he joined forces with Joe and John Mickey to institute Holden Mickey & Mickey Inc. Chip is a member of the Association of Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU).

He has been married to Carol Holden 50 years and has three children and ten grandchildren. Chip enjoys spending his free time entertaining his varied interests including world and military history, golf, baseball, lacrosse, and symphony concerts. Chip was past chairman of Centenary United Methodist Church’s Administrative Council.

His record of success is a testimony to his philosophy:

  • With 2023 business production has qualified for the industry’s Million Dollar Round Table for the 47th year (one of two advisors in NC and 17 in the US);
  • For 2008, in-force premiums ranked 75th largest in the United States, and 4th largest in North Carolina among Massachusetts Mutual life Insurance Company (MassMutual) advisors;
  • In 2001 awarded the elite ELIF Award (Exceptional Level of In-Force Business) from MassMutual, one of only 114 active advisors in the U.S. who have received this recognition;
  • Persistency rating from MassMutual (the number of clients who maintain their contracts) was in the top 1% for 2007;
  • Past President of Winston-Salem Estate Planning Council
  • Past North Carolina representative for Mass Mutual’s ­­­­­Political Action Committee

John E. Mickey, CLU®, CLTC

The Mickey family is a legacy with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), as well as the insurance and financial services industry. John Mickey joined the industry and MassMutual in 1976 as a third generation of life underwriters. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, John traveled the world for two years, including extended stays in both Scotland and Australia. Returning home, John and his father, Joseph H. Mickey, joined together in a strong partnership that lasted 35 years.

In 1989, John and his father joined with Chip Holden to form Holden Mickey & Mickey Inc., in downtown Winston-Salem. John is recognized within his company as well as the insurance industry for his leadership in the field as evidenced by his life membership in the Million Dollar Round Table. Relationship building has been the key strength of his client’s loyalty and long-term trust. He ties his success to being a dependable, sensitive listener and an advocate for each client.

John assists with the financial needs of the families and businesses he advises through various financial products, estate planning tools, and benefits programs available from over 30 insurance carriers. Attorneys and accountants are quick to refer clients to John because they recognize the value of a team approach to solving insurance and financial needs.

A Chartered Life Underwriter, John is a member of the Association of Advanced Life Underwriters, the Winston-Salem Estate Planning Council, and a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He has also earned the CLTC designation for certification in long term care coverage.

John’s volunteer services to agencies in the community have included leadership in Reynolda Rotary, the Moravian Church in the Southern Province, Home Moravian Church, and the Winston-Salem Chapter of the American Cancer Society, among others. John and his spouse of 43 years, Susan, reside in western Forsyth County in a stone house they have restored over the last three decades. For 25 years they raised a flock of sheep. The pastures are now grazed by Butch and Sundance, their miniature donkeys.

Over the last 25 years, David Holden has built his own financial services practice and is also
partnering with his father, Lawrence N. (Chip) Holden.

Since 1999, David has helped corporate and individual clients with their financial planning,
investments, and insurance. He previously worked with Merrill Lynch in Charlotte as a Certified
Financial Manager and was a top producer among young associates. In 2011, David was named
one of the Top 40 Leaders Under 40 in the Piedmont Triad by The Business Journal.

David has earned the following professional designations:

  • Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®)

A native of Winston-Salem, David was an All-American baseball player at R. J. Reynolds High School and continued his career as a scholarship baseball player at Wake Forest University, where he graduated with honors.  David is a past President of the Winston-Salem Estate Planning Council and has served on the Alumni Council at Wake Forest University and in many other capacities at the school.  As a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, David has served as the Finance Chair and on the Board of Trustees. He has also been involved in the community as the Treasurer and a Board Member of Crosby Scholars, a member of the Capital Campaign for Kaleideum and is serving on the Advocate’s Council for Summit School. He currently serves as President of the R.J. Reynolds High School Booster Club.  David and his wife, Shelley, live in Winston-Salem with their daughters, Joanna and Libby.

Steven H. Davis, CEPA, LUTCF®

Steven H. Davis, a principal who joined Holden & Mickey in 2012, brings more than 25 years of business experience to his work with individuals, small businesses, and privately held companies. His holistic approach to financial advising and estate planning helps his clients manage and protect their wealth while strengthening their financial holdings for the long term.

After studying psychology at Wake Forest University and Appalachian State University, Steven pursued a business opportunity. He owned and operated a successful business, expanding operations throughout Northwest North Carolina. In 2006, Steven negotiated the terms of a merger and eventual sale of his company.

Having over 25 years of business administration and ownership experience, Steven brings a unique set of skills and knowledge to the planning process. While continuing his practice of working with individuals and families in our area, Steven added the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation that opens a new dimension through which he advises business owners.

Steven is currently licensed to offer securities as a Registered Representative and is pursuing designations as Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) and Certified in Long-term Care (CLTC). He is also licensed to sell insurance products in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Colorado.

Steven has garnered awards from MassMutual as a Rising Leader and Junior Associate of the Year in 2010. He is regularly named to MassMutual’s Leaders’ Conference, recognized by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and based on prior calendar year sales. Recipients are agents of MassMutual. Steven qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table and is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

As an active member of our community, Steven and two friends started a charity event in 2004 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. To date the event has raised more than $500,000 to support that organization. He has served on the regional Red Cross Board of Directors.

A native of Winston-Salem, Steven graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School where he played varsity soccer and golf as well as first chair in the All-County Band. He and his wife Stacy, a CPA and city native, have three children: Wesley, Jackson, and Anna. In his spare time, Steven enjoys golf at Forsyth Country Club, working on his farm, hiking, and all types of ocean and stream fishing. He also retains his lifelong passion for music, poetry and literature.

Brian Holden

Brian Holden joins family members at the firm who have more than 50 years of experience in the financial services business. Brian specializes in wealth accumulation and income protection strategies. He is currently pursuing designations as a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) and
Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) professional.

After graduating from Syracuse University, Brian returned home to Winston-Salem with his wife Kara, who is a founder and Headmaster at Westlawn School in Winston-Salem. Brian has volunteered with Winston-Salem Lacrosse, The New Benefactors of Old Salem, Habitat for Humanity Young Professionals and The American Heart Association. Brian lives in Winston-Salem with his wife Kara and sons Brian and James.

Lynn Benton

Lynn Benton is the Insurance Service Director and has been with Holden & Mickey for 24 years. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in management and concentration in marketing. Her favorite part of working at Holden & Mickey is serving our clients and the relationships she has formed with them over the years. Lynn and her husband, Denny, have two children and two grandchildren. She enjoys crocheting, hunting, and playing cards.

Linda Long

Linda Long is the Office Manager and Employee Benefits and Health Insurance Specialist at Holden & Mickey and has been with the firm for eleven years. Prior to joining the firm, she worked at Long Communication Group for 25 years and was the Purchasing Manager. Her favorite part of working with Holden & Mickey is interacting with the clients. She and her husband Gary have two sons and two grandsons. In her free time, Linda enjoys playing with her grandsons, baking, and weightlifting.

Autumn Ryan

Autumn Ryan is a Senior Registered Client Service Associate and the Director of New Business. She has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. Before joining Holden & Mickey in 2015, she directed new business processing for over 40 advisors at Mass Mutual. She holds FINRA and state securities licenses, life and long-term care licenses, and the CLTC designation. Her favorite part of being at Holden & Mickey is her daily interaction with our clients and co-workers. Autumn enjoys spending time with her son, Scott, and taking walks with her dog, Buck.

A Winston-Salem native who grew up only a few blocks from the Holden & Mickey office, Joe Mickey’s family roots go back to Old Salem. Just as the Old Salem coffee pot, crafted by his tinsmith grandfather, Samuel T. Mickey, stands as a landmark for Old Salem, Joe’s acts of service, mostly unseen, will have a lasting impact on our community. He worked in the insurance industry for over 50 years, and was instrumental in forming the firm that is now Holden & Mickey, Inc. Joe’s record of service continues to inspire everyone at Holden & Mickey.
